How to configure AOL to transfer files through
the Residence Hall firewalls

Firewalls are being installed in the residence halls that provide security for the networks and to the students living on campus. Experience over the last several years has shown a rapid increase in both probes and compromises related to personally owned machines in the RH network. With recent compromises, even one or two machines being taken over and used for Denial of Service attacks can generate sufficient traffic to saturate a given link (denying or unreasonably slowing traffic to all residents)

AOL IM will pass through the firewall for chatting. However students can not connect directly to each other to transfer files. We have tested a method that will allow students to send files to each other and to others over the Internet. The following instructions will guide you through the process of configuring AOL IM properly.

Facts you need to understand to make this work.

  • You have to upgrade your AOL IM to the latest version. Currently that is 5.5.
  • You need to configure the file transfer preferences in IM to use "AOL as the proxy only". Once you start a chat session with someone, you can send files by clicking on File then send file, then pick the file(s) to send, then click send.
  • You can not click on the picture icon that connects directly to another user to send images. This is method makes you a server and will be blocked.
  • This file transfer method uses the Internet to send and receive files. The bandwidth used to transfer your files will count against your bandwidth limit. Use this bandwidth wisely!
  • You can send files through PSU email and not use Internet bandwidth. However there are limitations on files sent through PSU email servers. Please be aware of that.

Configuration instructions:

Make sure that you are using the newest version of AOL Instant Messenger. From the buddy list box, click on

My AIM then click on upgrade AIM

Click Upgrade now, then click ok

It will download the newest version of AOL. to your machine

Click OK. It will now install the program. Tell it whether or not you want to install icons on your desktop and in your programs menu.

When it finishes you will be able to sign in to AOL IM with the newest version.

Once you login the main AOL dialog box is shown with all your buddies listed. Hit the F3 button to go into preferences.

This will bring up the following box: (Note if hitting F3 doesn't show the box below, click on My AIM, then edit options, then edit preferences).

 Click on File Transfer,

then click on the firewall button. Another box will appear and you want to select "AOL proxy server only".

This configuration makes all file transfers go through the AOL file server.

This file transfer method uses the Internet to send and receive files. The bandwidth used to transfer your files will count against your bandwidth limit. Use this bandwidth wisely!

You can send files through PSU email and not use Internet bandwidth. However there are limits on the size of files that can be send through PSU email. Please be aware of that.
