Configuring Email
VERY IMPORTANT CHANGE:
Starting January 25, 2004, ITS required all email programs to login using SSL encryption.
Before this change ITS had made it a "opt in" option, it is now a mandatory option to pick in your email program setup in order to send or receive email through Penn State email servers. You must configure your email program so it uses a SSL login. Depending on the email program you choose to use, you will have to correctly set it up or you will not be able to use the Penn State email servers. Webmail already uses SSL encryption by default. Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora, Thunderbird, NetScape and other POP3 compliant email programs will need to be set correctly to work.

You can choose to use any POP3 compliant email program to access Penn State email. Listed below are links for instructions on how to setup the popular email programs at Penn State. If you don't like a program you have chose, try a different one until you find one you like.

If you use HotMail, AOL, Yahoo or some other web based email program, the traffic it generates to and from the Internet will count against you weekly bandwidth limits. Using these programs to use the Penn State email servers will not count against your bandwidth limits.

Configure Outlook for SSL (Required) | Outlook | Outlook Express | Eudora

If you go to a computer lab on campus or somewhere else, there is a way to get your Penn State Email. ITS provides a Webmail program to access "new" email by using a Internet ready connection and a browser window pointed to https://webmail.psu.edu. login with your ITS User ID and password. Here is a link to setup WebMail the first time.

Please note: ResCom recommends that you first configure one of the above listed email programs to use as your "primary" email program and only use WebMail when you're away from your computer and need to check for "new" Penn State email. WebMail has limits to how much you can store on line. Using the other email programs listed above allow you more space to store your mail and attachments.

WebMail leaves all mail on the Penn State server. The email clients listed above all save mail off the server to store it  locally on your computer. You will not see old email using the WebMail client if you use one of the other programs listed above (a POP3 email client). Most students use WebMail to check new mail that hasn't been delivered to their computer yet.

As always, if you have any questions or problems with these instructions, feel free to Contact your local ResCom office.
