Kazaa 1.7 Configuration

If you are using and older version of KaZaA media desktop, please follow this guide to prevent bandwidth usage from other KaZaA users downloading from your computer that will cause you to reach your bandwidth limit faster.  You are still required to keep your own downloads below 10GB a week to avoid having your connection limited to 56Kbit and disconnection.

Options Menu:

To get to the options menu, open KaZaA, click on the 'Tools' menu and select 'Options'.

When the options menu opens you will see this new window:

Starting under the 'User' tab (1), you will see the following options. Uncheck 'Launch KaZaA automatically'(2).  This will stop KaZaA from loading when Windows starts up.

Next, click on the 'Traffic' tab (1).  This will show the traffic options. At the top, KaZaA will allow you to set the folder in which newly downloaded files are stored.  This is also your shared folder; its contents are available to other KaZaA users to download from you if you allow them to. If you check the 'Disable sharing of files with other KaZaA members' box (2) at the bottom of this window, all of your shared files are no longer accessible by other KaZaA members.  It is recommended that you keep this box checked to prevent excessive bandwidth usage which will cause you to exceed Penn State's bandwidth restriction of 10GB for outbound data very quickly. Please review the connection agreement in detail if you are not familiar with the reprimands. Just to be safe, you should set the 'maximum number of simultaneous uploads' (3) to 0.

Next, click on the 'Advanced' tab (1).  Firstly, check the 'Do not function as a SuperNode' box (2).  This will not allow your computer to act as a SuperNode which processes data for other KaZaA members which will also consume your weekly bandwidth allowance.

That't it! You're done with setting up KaZaA for the most efficient use of your limited bandwidth at PSU.  Please take note that you are still responsible for keeping your own downloads below 10GB per week.
