Peer-to-peer programs are frequently used
to distribute copyrighted material. This

Since 2001, PSU has
been enforcing bandwidth limits as part of your
connection
agreement. A contributing factor for this enforcement is
the increased student use of file-sharing programs. While ResCom does
not support the use of file-sharing programs in any way, we do
encourage your using any network-based programs responsibly.
If you are using any file-sharing program, be sure TO TURN THE PROGRAM OFF COMPLETELY when you're not using it. If programs are not setup correctly, it is very likely that the default settings used by many of these programs will cause your computer to use up your weekly bandwidth allowance (very quickly). If you go over that limit, your connection will be restricted (please refer to the connection agreement for specifics on the reprimands). For more information on how to properly configure your file-sharing program, see the Learn to Configure File-Sharing Programs section below. |

ResCom does not encourage or condone the use of any file sharing programs to illegally distribute copyrighted material. These guides are for bandwidth configuration only. Please use these guides to help setup your programs responsibly:

HOWEVER...ResCom recommends that users do NOT use the following programs:
Bit Torrent type programs require you to share files as you download from others. If the material being shared has a copyright, sharing those files are illegal. Some Bit Torrent programs use a web browser and file transfer can be stopped when the browser is closed. Be aware that University Networking policies do not allow you to be a server in the residence halls. Why not? Most of these programs are known to use bandwidth regardless of whether you are using the computer program or not. This means that just having the program loaded on the machine whether open (or minimized in the system tray like many are) they will allow others in the world to use your bandwidth, and fast! |

The U:\ drive is a service provided by the ITS
department, giving students access to storage space on which to store data
you need to access from anywhere.
The U: drive is accessible from the residence halls, computer labs, and anywhere off campus. This access allows you to transfer data back and forth without floppy disks, cd's or zip disks. For setup information, you can go to the ITS setup page: |
